Investment in Innovation and its Influence on Net Sales: An Analysis Based on PINTEC Data

The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of innovation investments on net sales from major national sectors. The data was collected from the free access to the Technological Innovation Research (PINTEC) database. To proceed the analysis, we collected the PINTEC data from the years 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2011, consolidating them in a specific way. The analysis were developed through regressions of panel data with fixed effects, according to Hausman test, and the definition of large scale sectors was based on the median of net sales. The results suggest that, on average, for the large scale sectors the acquisition of machinery & equipment and industrial projects & other technical improvements are statistically relevant variables to increase the net sales.

Stakeholder Prioritization in Brazilian Companies Disclosing GRI Reports

This study aimed to describe the stakeholder prioritization in Brazilian companies and their relationship with the industry. In this research, prioritization is operationally defined as the preferential treatment to the interests of one stakeholder over another. The sample is composed of 90 companies with sustainability reporting adopting the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework. We used the Mann-Whitney test to compare the level of treatment with the interests of internal and external stakeholders. We confirmed the hypotheses that the internal stakeholder has a higher level of treatment and that the level of treatment is influenced by characteristics of the industries. This study presents as theoretical contribution the analysis of the industry factor in stakeholders prioritization. Understanding the mechanisms of stakeholders prioritization is important for the manager to encourage relevant stakeholders to the achievement of the company's goals in its sector.

Customer Participation in Professional Services Operations And Its Impacts On Flexibility and Costs

This study has its contribution to deepen the understanding about the paradoxical relation between flexibility and costs in the field of operations service strategy and management, approaching the customer participation affects on the professional services. Through a multi-case study with four professional services organizations, using data collection through semi-structured interviews and documentary research, we identified four main sources of variability, namely: customer arrival, the diagnosis of needs, production and implementation and the delivery value analysis. We concluded that the professional services firms prioritize customer participation and this implies to accommodate variability in flexible service operations to meet the most different types of customers without an alignment to the strategic plan for business growth.

The Excellence Baldrige Criteria in The Effectiveness of Higher Education Institutions Management

This paper aims to analyze the antecedents of effectiveness of education management in seven units of a Higher Education Institution (IES, in Portuguese) located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. The research is a quantitative study and was applied in the case study format in the largest private Brazilian education organization listed in the stock market. Data sample were collected through a survey and the informants are directors, course coordinators, teachers and administrative staff. The results were obtained through the structural equation modeling in relation to Excellence Baldrige Criteria, and indicate the model proposed by this research, that the Strategic Planning and Operation Focus influence directly on the Effectiveness of Management. We verified the existence of a positive correlation between all the constructs of the Baldrige Excellence Model with the Effectiveness of Management of the HEI.

Divide In Marketing Between Academics And Practitioners

In marketing, there is a clear divide between academics and practitioners. However, there are few empirical studies in Brazil that help clarify the phenomenon. In light of this context, the present research seeks to understand how academics and practitioners perceive the divide between the academy and businesses and how this affects the applicability of theories, concepts and models in marketing. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten academics who teach marketing and 15 practitioners involved in the area. The reasons for the divide are presented, with emphasis on how the teaching of marketing contributes to the phenomenon. The paper shows how the divide affects the applicability of the discipline, and it gives suggestions on how to reduce the divide. Academics and practitioners show interest in reducing the divide. The difficulties for this to are owing to the different understandings of what marketing is. Such an inconsistency can be explained based on the purposes/reasons that lead these professionals to practice the discipline.

Agreeing and Impacting: The Effect of the Shareholders' Agreement on Firms' Market Value

Some countries admit the presence of pacts that allow to change the relations and balance of power control exercised by the shareholders. Known as shareholder agreements, these pacts are contracts between two or more partners whose goal is to agree on the direction of the relationship between its members. Empirical results suggest that shareholder’ agreements play an important role in low legal protection markets because they inhibit the ability of the majority shareholder to extract benefits in detriment of minority shareholder. This paper aims to analyze the effect of shareholders' agreements in the market value of Brazilian companies from 1999 to 2013. The sample is composed by 472 companies, including 86 companies with shareholder’ agreements. The empirical strategy comprises the fixed effects method on a panel data model. The results show that the effect on firm value is positive as the degree of protection of minority shareholders is higher. However, the regressions tested with the indirect ownership structure have not been able to provide evidence to that effect.

A Design Management Framework for the Fashion Industry

Organizations have been demonstrating an interest to invest in design, perceiving it as a strategic element to obtain competitive advantage. Design must become an integral part of the corporate objectives, permeating all levels of corporate activities. For this reason, this paper aims to propose a framework based on concepts of competences by checking and assessing their applicability in design management in the apparel industry. This study included conducting a literature research, through the development of a systematic literature review as well as an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, through the use of in-depth interviews. This proposed framework was then exposed to the evaluation of specialists. After this assessment, adjustments were suggested, resulting in the final proposal of the framework for training and integration of individuals and teams in design management for companies in the apparel industry, supported by the concepts of competence. This framework identifies phases and design professional activities that are crucial for the occurrence of design management and are related to product development process, articulating the organizational strategies and the market research. By using the framework, we expect design to affect all organization levels, being present in the stages of the development process in a collection.

Corporate Social-Environmental Responsibility as an Attraction and Retention Factor for Young Professionals

This research investigates if company social-environmental responsibility (SER) is an attraction and retention factor for young professionals in two studies. The first study, an experiment, investigates whether such practices influence the attraction exerted by the company as a prospect employer among undergraduate students, considering different wage and professional development conditions. The second study, a survey, investigates the impact of company SER on voluntary turnover among trainees, controlling for individual differences and satisfaction with income, growth and interests. The results suggest that SER is an important element in the attractiveness exercised by companies as they recruit young professionals, and in the retention of trainees, since it is statistically associated with the likelihood of them leaving their companies after disputed selection processes and expensive training programs.

The Strategic Involvement of Stakeholders in the Efficiency of non-profit Sport Organisations: from a Perspective of Survival to Sustainability

The objective of this study is to analyse the efficiency of non-profit sports clubs and identify the perceptions of their directors with regards to the stakeholders that exert the greatest influence over club efficiency levels. In order to analyse the efficiency of these clubs, we made recourse to the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. We also applied the Mann-Whitney test, to identify whether there are significant differences between efficient and non-efficient clubs with regards to the influence held by their stakeholders. We thus report that the majority of clubs operate efficiently. Both the efficient and the non-efficient clubs classify the club managers, members, sponsors, fans and athletes as the most important stakeholders to their efficiency levels. The results convey how there are no significant differences among the management team perceptions on the role of stakeholders in attaining club efficiency. The study also details the respective procedures that inefficient clubs should adopt in order to approximate the efficiency frontier.

Strategic Antecedents and Consequents for the Performance of E-Business Companies

This article aims to examine the influence of the strategic background and of the business model elements on its value proposition, and to investigate the relationship between the value proposition and the performance of e-business. The research is supported theoretically by the Technological, Organizational and Environmental framework (TOE), derived from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT), for the Strategic Background (IFINEDO, 2011), by the Business Model theory (OSTERWALDER; PIGNEUR; 2010; SOUZA; BATISTA, 2014) and by the business performance literature (RAMANUJAN; VENKATRAMAN, 1987). We tested the proposed model with a sample of 252 observations, using the structural equation modeling. The main results indicate a partial influence of the strategic background in the value proposition through the constructs management positioning, organizational readiness, relative advantage and pressure from stakeholders. Relating to the business model, the constructs of market segmentation, customer relationships, capabilities, partnerships and revenue model influence the value proposition, which in turn affects positively the performance of e-business companies.

Theoretical Model of Engagement in the Context of Brand Communities

This essay proposes to refine the concept of consumer engagement in the context of brand communities. A comprehensive review of studies addressing the phenomenon of brand community was made. This paper follows the tradition of Marketing Research and Consumer Behavior, more specifically the perspective of cognitive psychology. The main theoretical foundation of the study is the Social Identity Theory (SIT), also incorporating relevant contributions from the perspective of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT). Therefore, this study contributes to the progress of research on the phenomenon of engagement in brand communities, proposing a theoretical model that relates engagement with its antecedents factors and reflective dimensions.

Corporate Image: Influencing Factors from the Viewpoint of Students of Distance Learning Courses

New information technologies enable different interactions in the educational environment, affecting how students perceive and construct images about educational institutions that have adopted distance-learning programs. This article identifies which factors are associated with the perception of corporate image, from the viewpoint of distance-learning students at public higher-education institutions. The proposed study is quantitative in nature. The research analysis units are Higher Education Institutions in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) that offer e-Learning undergraduate courses in the CEDERJ consortium. The units of observation are students enrolled at the São Fidélis hub. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the SPSS program. The study demonstrated both the multidimensionality of the image and that the institution’s Global Image is associated most strongly with its “Quality”. In turn, “Virtual Environment” was the factor most strongly associated with Affective Image.

Learning, Portfolio Complexity and Informational Asymmetry in Forecasts of Sell-Side Analysts

The aim of this study was to analyze the association of learning and complexity in the target price forecasts and sell-side analysts’ recommendations on the BM&FBovespa. The sample comprised forecasts of 195 stocks, 75 brokers and 569 analysts between 2005 and 2013, analyzed by linear models with panel data. Our results suggest that the experience with the stock, with the sector and complexity of the portfolio confirmed the learn by doing, but the overall experience showed contradictions due to information asymmetry. Despite anchoring in their peers, analysts achieved significant returns, but showed forecasts with low accuracy. Therfore, we concluded that more experienced analysts may intentionally contradict themselves in an attempt to bias the market. Finally, we suggest the development of less biased analyst rankings in order to increase the competitiveness and quality in the results of the analyzes.

Businesses with focus on customers through the use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) perform better and win customer loyalty. Therefore, it is relevant to study the relationship between customers and airline companies, given that the aviation industry is highly competitive and relatively commoditized. Thus the aim of this study was to develop and validate a scale to measure customer’s perception of relationship with airline companies. The scale was composed of four primary factors (customer loyalty, purchase experience, flight experience, and service) and a second order factor (customer relationship), all with good psychometric indices. The development and validation of a scale in an industry little explored by the CRM literature was the main contribution of this research, as it may be used as a diagnostic tool for airline companies to scale up their relationship with strategic customers and achieve more effective results.

In the process of performance evaluation it is essential to define the needs, capacities and contributions of stakeholders. The objective of this paper is to analyze the perception of managers of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in relation to the Satisfaction and Contribution of Stakeholders to organizational performance. The research was conducted with 7 MSMEs. The results from the interviews showed that (i) there is a broader understanding of who are the most important stakeholders, opposing the view of the owners and customers and (ii) the contribution of stakeholders expected by the business is more subjective, considering the continuity of the relationship with the parties and a delivery of superior value. Finally, the results provided the basis for the proposition of new dimension called Expectations of Continuity and Partnership as an element to assess stakeholder contribution.

The CRM process is supported by the relationship orientation and the customer knowledge management derived from data collection, data consolidation, data analysis and knowledge distribution to support decision making. The interaction between CRM and Knowledge Management (KM) is quite intuitive, especially when both are supported by Information Technology. The goal of this paper is to develop a Customer Knowledge Management (CKM) theoretical model in order to assess its contribution to the relationship management of students at one of the largest higher education private groups of the world. A state of contrasts comparing groups of students exposed to CKM-designed marketing campaigns (approximately 600,000 students) and unexposed ones (approximately 17,000 students) demonstrated how the proposed model effectively contributed to CRM initiatives. It was found that students exposed to marketing activities had a higher reenrollment rate than those that were not reached by the campaign. It was also possible to calculate the return on investment (ROI) of CKM activities.

The objective of this research was to examine the influence of macroeconomic and institutional factors when determining the capital structure of Latin American companies from 2009 to 2014, and also analyze if the significance of these factors to explain the capital structure of the companies is changed taking into account the financing composition. We used hierarchical linear modeling to process data. The main results pointed that, both the representative variables of characteristics of the firm and representative variables of countries are important determinants of the capital structure of the companies. However the variables of the firm explain a much higher percentage of variance of leverage. Thus, we emphasize that there is still much to be done in order to analyze the effects of macroeconomic and institutional factors. We expect that this study has created contributions to the national literature, by using a theoretical and also econometric approach that has not been much explored so far. As well as for market agents to examine the determinants of capital structure, considering the institutional aspects

Despite the alleged benefits of m-banking, its acceptance has been short of industry expectations. One plausible explanation may be consumers' initial lack of trust in available services. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of trust in the intention to use m-banking in the Brazilian context, specifically among users of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, we developed and tested a model that relates trust and its antecedents (familiarity, ease of use, perceived usefulness, safety, privacy and innovativeness) with the intention to use m-banking. We got a sample of 272 users of financial mobile apps and through structural equation modeling the hypotheses were tested. The results confirmed most of the proposed hypotheses, and we found significant relationships between the construct trust and other constructs, which significantly influence the intended use of banking services via m-banking

Debriefing's Influence on Learning in Business Game: An Experimental Design

This paper studies the influence of debriefing in the learning of the participants of business games. Through quasi-experimental study we examined the self-declarations of 112 undergraduate Business Management students undertaking the 8th term, divided into two groups: experimental, exposed to debriefing; and control, not exposed to the debriefing. Mann-Whitney´s tests revealed that the quantum of learning perceived by the members of the experimental group was statistically significantly higher than the members of the control group in seven out of nine learning variables assessed (p < 0.05). The average effect size (d = 0.45) shows an average improvement of 18%. These results suggested that the debriefing positively influence on experiential learning cycle promoted by business games. In the perspective of Kolb's experiential learning cycle (Kolb, 1984), our findings suggest that Reflective observation and Abstract conceptualization stages can be reinforced by subsequent debriefing activities to the simulation rounds, in order to enhance continuous processes of action and reflection of the participants, according to the spiral experiential learning cycle

Half century of academic production in Capital Market in Brazil in high impact journals

This article presents an analysis of the Brazilian scientific research in Capital Markets, from 1961 to 2016, published in journals of high impact in the area of Administration, Accounting and Tourism. We intend to outline a research profile in Capital Markets from journals with A2 impact factor classification according to the Qualis/CAPES list in 2010, as well as the specific periodicals of the area such as RBFin, RBMEC, CE and RC&F. Methodologically, this is an empirical study with bibliometric investigation, longitudinal temporal cross-section, quantitative approach and a statistical non-probabilistic sampling, descriptive regarding the purpose, and documental regarding the means. As main results, capital market articles represented 458 papers (6.12%) of the 7,489 papers published in these journals, produced by 607 authors in 12 different Brazilian scientific journals, emphasizing that the Brazilian production represents only 43% of foreign production, that is, 13,053 articles of 91,684 articles. The RBFin, RC&F, RBMEC and RAE (Print) published, respectively, the majority of the articles, with the RBFin being the journal that stood out with 28% of the scientific production in the studied period. Therefore, the scientific production of Capital Markets appears to be very concentrated in few individuals, in institutions of the southeast and south regions and published, mostly, in specific scientific periodicals.

Market-Oriented Accounting Standard and Analysts’ Performance: Evidence from Brazil

This research investigates if the accounting standard oriented to external users contributes to improve decision-making in the market, represented by analysts’ forecast capacity. The hypothesis is that the forecast properties for Brazilian companies’ EPS were not impacted by the change in the accounting standard. The data refer to the period 2004-2014; we employed linear multiple regression, estimated through panel data to investigate the accuracy and precision and logistic regression to scrutinize biases. Our findings indicated, with significance, that the analysts’ forecasts did not improve, thus, not rejecting the hypothesis. It was highlighted that in the convergence with the new accounting standard, the pessimistic bias was foregrounded, bringing forth analysts’ conservatism; the accuracy diminished with the new standard and the precision between periods was not altered. This research lacks depth, considering its low coefficients of determination, and in the sense of determining the causes of such behavior. An inquiry about the utilization of accounting information by analysts was also generated due to the magnitude of the forecast errors detected.

The Cyclicality of Loan Loss Provision in Brazilian Commercial Banks

Debates on banking regulation have increasingly given rise to a discussion on the relationship between the loan loss provision and business cycles. Provisioning rules for credit losses for banks in Brazil have mixed system characteristics, which could theoretically lead banks to pro-cyclical or countercyclical behavior, which reinforces the need for research to indicate what has actually been the effect of these provisions in the economy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between banks’ provisioning for credit losses and business cycles in Brazil, in an attempt to confirm its nature, a condition capable of avoiding potentiating the effects of economic contraction or expansion. Using an econometric model with accounting and macroeconomic variables, the survey involved 91 commercial banks in the period from 2001 to 2012. Confirming that the delay in payments of principal and charges is a key condition for the recognition of banking provisions in Brazil, which highlights its predominantly retrospective nature, the results point to the existence of a pro-cyclical behavior by the banks surveyed, indicating that when GDP is on the rise, provisions tend to fall and vice versa.

Market as Religion: The Dynamics of Business Network in Megachurches

Contemporaneously, in market view, the market of symbolic goods of religion is characterized by the pluralism of options that the postmodern individual has to join religious institutions. In this scenerie, it establishes a situation of fierce rivalry for the achievement of competitive advantage. The according exploratory and qualitative research aimed at analyzing the marketing strategies developed by the IURD leaders with their stakeholders in the Solomon’s Temple. The results show that in the competitive market of symbolic goods of religion, the magnitude and sumptuousness of megatemples construct a brand image that places the theological concerns of a future life or of salvation in the background, prioritizing practical solutions to everyday problems .The contribution of the research is to explain how the neopentescostal churches reinterpret traditional values of religiosity, by accepting with naturalness what had been rejected by traditional Protestantism and, thus, to consolidate and at the same time to legitimize the new dynamics of the religions that they act with the logic of the market.

The Impact of Cross-National Distance on Survival of Foreign Subsidiaries

Survival of overseas subsidiaries is an important success indicator of foreign investments. Research on institutional approaches has been undertaken in this way, but generally restricted to a limited number of cross-national distances (CNDs). This research examines the impact of nine CNDs and local experience on subsidiary survival of foreign subsidiaries. Moreover, we tested the moderating effects of local experience on CND to analyze whether it could reduce these distances. Using a sample of 1,650 foreign subsidiaries established in 36 European countries, we applied Cox regression with a longitudinal analysis for the period 2007-2014. The results indicate that CND significantly affect subsidiary survival. Out of nine CND, four increase the risk of mortality, while one increases longevity. Local experience also plays a significant role for the continuity of the foreign operation in the local market, while moderating the impact between one CND and survival. These results can provide valuable information for strategic processes and better decision making of internationalization, and contribute to the success and survival of international operations.

Institutional Distance, Regional Clusters and Performance of Foreign Subsidiaries: Evidences from Brazil

Institutional distance (ID) has come to be a key concept in understanding the determinant factors of the performance of a multinational company’s (MNC) subsidiaries in emerging economies. However, the results of empirical studies are contradictory and inconclusive. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of ID on the performance of foreign firms’ subsidiaries and the extent to which these effects may be mediated by locating these companies within regional clusters and by different choices of entry mode. Through a regression analysis of a sample of 308 subsidiaries of foreign firms, results show that whereas ID is negatively related with the firm’s performance, locations within clusters and access to the resources afforded by economies of agglomeration have positive effects on performance. Finally, the empirical evidence indicates that access to the resources of industrial clusters moderates the effects of ID on the performance, motivating MNCs to adopt overseas entry modes for complete control.

Relevant Factors in The Post-Merger Systems Integration and Information Technology in Brazilian Banks

This article discusses the factors present in post-merger integration of Systems and Information Technology (SIT) that lead to positive and negative results in mergers and acquisitions (M & A). The research comprised three of the largest acquiring banks in Brazil. We adopted two methods of research, qualitative, to operationalize the theoretical concepts and quantitative, to test the hypotheses. We interviewed six executives of banks that held relevant experience in M & A processes. Subsequently, we applied questionnaires to IT professionals who were involved in the SIT integration processes. The results showed that the quality and expertise of the integration teams and managing the integration were the most relevant factors in the processes, with positive results for increased efficiency and the increased capacity of SIT. Negative results were due to failures in exploiting learning opportunities, the loss of employees and the inexpressive record of integration procedures.

Knowledge Management as a Determining Factor in the Retention of Professionals in the Industry: A Case Study in an Organization in the Furniture Industry

This study investigates which one(s) of the knowledge management factor(s), via the tacit and/or explicit way, are crucial in retaining professionals in a company in the furniture industry. The research was exploratory, with lifting procedure, and qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were collected from June to August 2014 in a furniture industry of Francisco Beltrão/PR, through a questionnaire applied to 224 employees of administrative, industrial and commercial areas, as follows: 11 managers, 44 responsible for the area and 169 operational employees. The Likert scale detected the frequency of respondents’ views. To provide consistency to the findings, the data obtained Multivariate Analysis statistical treatment, developed in the free R software. We applied the Main Component Analysis, Factorial Analysis, Correspondence Analysis, Correlation Analysis and Chi-squared Test separately for tacit and explicit ways. After the analysis, we concluded that through the factors shown in the study, both pathways influence the retention of employees of the surveyed company.

Effects of Voluntary Product Recall on Consumer’s Trust

This study analyzed the impact of voluntary product recall due to product failure on consumer’s trust. Since trust is composed by integrity, competence and benevolence, this study verified the mediator effect of these constructs on the relation between recall and trust. Once trust is essential for the establishment of a relationship between companies and consumers, this research also evaluated the effects of relational and transactional purchase situations on consumer’s trust and its constructs. We conducted an experimental study with a 2 (recall: control; voluntary recall) x 2 (purchase situation: relational; transactional) between subjects design. The results indicated that voluntary recall has a positive effect on the variables analyzed. Integrity and competence fully mediate the relation between voluntary recall and trust. Purchase situation moderates the effect of voluntary recall on competence.

A Reformulation of the Dual Career Conceptual Model for Analysis in an Organizational Scope: Revealing new Aspects

Couples who live a dual career, in general, are characterized by their continuing professional engagement and their desire for personal growth together. It is a synergy between career aspirations and family sphere, so that they co-exist; reflecting nowadays, a challenge for people who seek to live this duality. Not exempt from it, it is possible to understand the need for management models of people who are in harmony with the desires of dual career couples who are part of organizations. If in the 1980s the existence of dual career couples was not so common in Brazil, nowadays organizations increasingly receive these couples, which impacts the need for people management models to keep up with these social changes. Therefore, the model recognizes that the personal dimension (impacts) on the organizational context cannot be avoided, and also that other factors affect both spheres (personal and organizational) when referring to the normative roles that permeate these areas. The main intention of this essay is to construct a theoretical model of dual career to consider the factor - organization, as vital to understand (and accept) the need to consider other dimensions on the dual career analytical perspective. The first evidences of dual career studies in Brazil revealed that the look at this movement only from the individual's margin is limited. This way, to consider the existence of other dimensions and consequently the influences they may cause, favors an expansion of the perspective, and also brings a detailing about the external factors (organization, society and culture) that influence the dual career couple. To consider that this couple, as well as having personal challenges in the relationship between work and family, is subject to the culture that regulates their roles (men and women) and that directly influences how organizations will handle that topic reveals the merit of this study. This, in turn, draws attention to the organizational sphere and shows that it cannot be detached from this reality. Considering that people management policies, that include dual career couples, are emerging.

The Learning of Cooking in the Light of the Social Practices and the Organizational Aesthetics

The aim of this article was to analyze the learning process of cooking in the two regional restaurants from the Brazilian northeast in the light of social practices and the organizational aesthetics. Thereby, it carried out a qualitative research drawn on an aesthetic approach. The construction of empirical data was through the mehod of zooming in and zooming out, operationalized through participant observation, informal conversations, and semi structure interviews. The analysis were carried out using aesthetics categories related to the cooking practice. The results show that the cooking learning occurs through the use of perceptive faculties along with collective aesthetic judgements constituting the social practice of cooking. Conclusions highlight that the cooking practice implies on the taste making that represents a sensible knowledge resulted from what is touchable, visible, hearing, smelled, and tasted.

This paper links brand love and sports management, with the intention to identify the relationship of brand love with their constructs antecedents (self-expression, performance satisfaction and relationship satisfaction) and consequent (behavioral loyalty, attitudinal loyalty and positive word of mouth) and see if the soccer team is a moderating factor in these relationships . The theoretical model was based on Santana (2009) used in a survey with 270 fans of soccer rival teams: Sport Club Internacional and Grêmio Football Portoalegrense. The results were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling. It was identified that the soccer team is a moderating factor in the relations proposals. Thus, it is concluded that the study showed that sports management should be customized, as each team represents something different for their fans. Managers of sports marketing need first to know what image the team presents and what are the feelings involved.

The Future of Research in Strategy Implementation in the BRICS Context

Albeit the development of the capacity to implement strategic change being a challenge to modern organizations, the studies in this area have prioritized intern issues of the organization, relegating it as a secondary plan, the contextual factors. Implementing a new strategy implies in the alignment of resources and internal capabilities to the organizational reality, adjusting them to the needs or external impositions. Thus, this study aims to identify research suggestions on strategy implementation and relate them to the characteristics of the countries belonging to the BRICS, through a systematic review. In order to meet this goal, the coevolution perspective was used to support the discussion of strategy implementation, stimulating reflections on the role of management and the environment in the context of strategic change. Academically speaking, the results point to an update on the research agenda on implementation strategy; at the managerial level, we present insights for managers of companies operating or that intend to settle in the BRICS countries.

The Determinants of the Life Cycle Stages of Brazilian Public Companies: A Study Based on FinancialAccounting Variables

This paper analyses the relation between firms’ life cycles stages according to Dickinson’s (2011) definition and accounting and financial ratios. We applied multinomial logistic regression analysis on a sample of 1,515 observations of public companies listed on BM&FBOVESPA between 2005 and 2012. Based on the literature about firms’ life cycle stages (YAN; ZHAO, 2010; MILLER; FRIESEN, 1984; FAMA; FRENCH, 2001) the accounting and financial ratios used were dividends distribution, leverage, market-to-book, return on equity, firm size and revenue growth. The results show that leverage, dividends distribution, market-to-book, return on equity, firm size and revenue growth could be used as explanatory factors to classify firms’ life cycle stages.

The selection of partners is strategic in inter-organizational networks. One of the most important aspects is the definition of criteria for selection, that are the minimal characteristics required from those prospected. This study aimed to identify the most important criteria for the selection of members in horizontal inter-organizational networks, also describing their influence on network activities. First, we applied 120 questionnaires to managers of inter-organizational networks to identify the degree of importance of criteria previously treated in the literature. After, we interviewed 16 managers enabling us to identify other criteria, as well as understanding their influence on network activities. All of the 20 criteria from the literature were considered with significant importance by managers and the following criteria were added: trustworthiness, entrepreneur’s profile and company lifetime. The results aim to contribute to the selection of partners and provide information for the construction of the inter-organizational networks literature.

Drivers of the Technology Adoption In Healthcare

This paper proposes a theoretical framework for the study of the diffusion of ICT in management and assistance services in healthcare and empirically verifies its applicability in studying adoption of technology in this area. There was a review of literature in the period 2004-2014. Based on this framework, the researchers verified empirically the applicability of organizational drivers proposed in the prior conditions, through a case study conducted by interviews with 13 managers of a Brazilian public hospital that is adopting a nursing prescription module. Through the content analysis, eight organizational drivers of the technology adoption were confirmed. For future research, it is relevant to verify the applicability of the organizational and individual drivers in the other phases of the framework organized according to Rogers (1983), as well as in the prior conditions, either by new case studies or by developing quantitative research instruments about the management process of technology adoption in organizations.

Sustainable Competitive Advantage: A Survey of Companies in Southern Brazil

A Sustainable Competitive Advantage emerges as an important factor in the perception of value of goods and services, which should be considered as elements of competitive differentiation. This study aims at identifying the relationship between sustainable competitive advantage and organizational performance, as well as measuring the relationship of environmental sustainability and social responsibility as attributes of sustainable competitive advantage. In order to achieve that, a survey was carried out in 1496 different size companies and activity sectors in Brazil. For the data analysis and interpretation we used a structural equation modeling technique. The results indicate that the Sustainable Competitive Advantage construct is an important antecedent of organizational performance because it highlights fundamental attributes for organizations to achieve positive economic consequences. This research contributes to organizational management and to the scientific community with the provision of a framework that assists in the identification of relevant strategic resource features.

This work looks into the dynamics of the competitive structure and strategic positioning of Brazilian banks. Over the eighteen years covered by the study, we saw periods of strategic instability in this industry and differing structures of strategic groups, with regard to not only their number, but also their composition. Our study therefore provides empirical evidence that we will hardly find periods of full strategic stability. These findings denote that, at some moment, there is a change in the strategic positioning of these firms and provides insight with regard to the competitive patterns of an industry over the period.

Social innovation research has been increasing over the last decades in many countries and fields of study. This study understands social innovation (SI) as a way to mitigate social problems, resulting in new or improved solution for a specific community. This paper analyzes the research in the field of social innovation in the business management area, understanding its antecedents and trends. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to propose a framework to guide further research in social innovation. Through a systematic literature review, the paper offers a preliminary framework with sub-themes of interest, possible contexts and actors involved in social innovation initiatives. The antecedents showed that the SI since the first concepts presents issues related to social change and has evolved to understand the relationships between different actors, between institutions and the social context where it is inserted. The trends link the SI to areas such as institutional theory; social movements theory; power and multi-actors perspective.

The Impact of Innovative Products in the Metallic Zinc Market Growth in Brazil

International market movements have been stimulating the recent process of industrialization in Brazil, with an increasing growth in the offer and demand of higher added value products in various sectors and segments. Metallic zinc plays a significant role in the Brazilian exports and in the automotive and building industries as well. Further to the availability of new technologies, the zinc industry in Brazil has been commercializing zinc alloys, perceived as higher added value products, for several applications. This study aims at analyzing how innovation and the zinc alloys may influence the metallic commodities market development in Brazil. It was carried a nationwide survey with a non-probabilistic sample of either employees or owners of companies that use zinc and its alloys. For the answers analysis it was used the Discourse of the Collective Subject, a qualitative and quantitative methodology. Zinc alloys influence positively the metallic zinc market growth, though their high prices were considered as a restriction factor for their use.

Global Innovation in Foreign Subsidiaries: The Impact of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Corporate Networks

The article aims to show the differentiated moderating role of integration between the headquarters and subsidiary companies to explain the potential of local innovations becoming global innovations. Throughout the framework and hypotheses, we propose two global innovation development processes. In order to test them, we analyzed a sample of 172 subsidiaries from the structural equations technique to test the hypotheses and multiple-groups comparison in order to evaluate the moderating effect of subsidiaries embeddedness. The results confirm the adherence of a presented process: entrepreneurial orientation is associated with local innovation when moderated by embeddedness. In turn, this local innovation has great potential to become a global innovation. Another result diverged from the one presented in the hypotheses, but it has an important contribution. The result shows that the entrepreneurial orientation is associated with the inclusion of the subsidiary in the network, which has the potential of developing global innovation, but to do so it would have to be a radical or disruptive innovation.

System dynamics is an approach to analyze the behavior of complex systems, such as the productive chains, strictly considering the inherent characteristics. This approach is based on mathematical concepts of nonlinear processes developed in mathematics and physics and consolidated in engineering. The concepts inherent in this approach assists in creating a mathematical model that represents a production chain by using computer simulation. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to present the formalization of the dynamic model of assessing the sustainability of Brazilian ethanol production. We analyzed the external environment and the scenarios needed for a deeper understanding of relation of cause and effect, causal loops and diagrams of flows and stocks because of the awareness stage, with regard to understanding the problems involved, according to methodology known as design science.

TOURQUAL: Proposal of a Protocol For Quality Evaluation on Services at Tourist Attractions

Tourism has been an important economic activity worldwide in recent years, and the increasing number of tourists and the competition among destinations pressure for the highest quality possible for tourists. The objective of this research is to propose a model to analyze the quality of services at tourist attractions. The first stage consisted of two bibliometric researches being performed, in order to identify the ‘state of art’ and verify the existing models of quality evaluation. Identified 36 models and 211 indicators of quality. From this initial exploratory research, a preliminary theoretical model was designed which worked with 35 indicators. The second stage collected and analyzed comments left by tourists on TripAdvisor.com. Analyzed 68.301 comments about tourist attractions in eight Brazilian cities, using the software T-LAB and compared with the indicators in the preliminary theoretic model. After of 35 indicators, 23 were maintained, 12 were excluded, and three new theoretic indicators were created, which made it possible to build a model able to be empirically tested. The test was carried out with 476 tourists who evaluated tourist attractions in Florianópolis-Brazil. In the confidence and questionnaire validation test the Alpha Conbranch presented an excellent result of 0.904 confirming the proposed model.

Efficiency Determinants in Brazilian Football Clubs

The aim of this study is to analyze the efficiency of Brazilian football clubs in generating revenues and the reasons behind it. To achieve this goal, we applied quantitative methods including Data Envelopment Analysis and Tobit regression modeling to data on the best clubs from 2012 to 2014, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation ranking. The results allowed for the inference that the largest Brazilian clubs, such as Grêmio (RS), Palmeiras (SP) and Vasco (RJ), were not efficient in any period under analysis. Others, such as Guarani (SP) and Guaratinguetá (SP), were efficient in all of years under consideration. With the Tobit regression model, we were able to determine that winning titles and the elite status of a given club are decisive factors in achieving efficiency. Included among the strategies that allow for greater efficiency in Brazilian clubs are the better utilization of stadiums and club assets, maximization of the financial worth of player popularity, and joining these with titles and a place in the A Series. Finally, the results of this study contribute to the strategic development of the football business, highlighting the positive effects that efficiency yields for clubs, thus supporting the growing body of research on sports management in Brazilian academia.

How far is World Champion from World Class? Institutional effects on a Brazilian non-profit sports organization

The objective of this research is to identify the main factors for the internationalization of Brazilian soccer teams via the strategic networks and institutional view approaches. The literature review unveils that ties and connections to the access and acquisitions of inimitable resources, learning races and being a leader or occupying an important position in a network are the main factors for the network formation to achieve internationalization. We adopted the single case study method, and data collection was done by in depth-interviews with ten key respondents. The main findings revealed that resource acquisition capabilities, the organization’s size, brand and image reputation and institutional environment are relevant factors for the internationalization of a firm by networks. As a theoretical contribution, firms that have strong brand and image reputation with resources that will strength network are an important factor for a firm entering a network or developing one. Regarding managerial perspective, a main contribution is to propose a sequence of factors to be used in a specific way.

Fiscal Responsibility Strategy in Brazilian Football Clubs: A Dynamic Efficiency Analysis

The objective of this study is to structure an indicator of dynamic efficiency focused on fiscal responsibility strategy of Brazilian football clubs and explain the concept of efficiency by the market structure and sports performance. Our main contribution to the previous empirical literature is the utilization of an additive model for temporal series called the Dynamic Slack Based Model. We estimated the inter-temporal efficiency of 25 football clubs of a balanced panel data that span the period 2010-2014. The results showed that the dynamic efficiency of the Brazilian football clubs is, on average, 80.62%. Finally, the results shown in the explanatory model suggest that the features of market structure and sporting factors have positive and significant associations with dynamic efficiency such as the size of the club, participation in the “Libertadores” Cup, access to a higher division and relegation to a lower division.

Management is not a Game: The Effects of Strategy and Structural Changes in the Competitiveness of Football Clubs

This article analyzes the use of strategy, structure and professionalization to improve the long-term competitiveness of sport organizations. The case study contemplates two of the top ten Brazilian football clubs using qualitative data from 21 interviews with their upper management, and a documentary research of secondary data. The results indicate that similar structural changes and professionalization processes have different implications for the clubs, with distinct contributions to their growth and competitiveness. The research presents evidence that both the formulation of the strategy and the way it is implemented are determinant in conciliating sports and financial objectives with the responses to internal and external contingencies, implementing organizational changes to benefit the performance of the club on-field and off-field.

The Determinants of Brazilian Football Clubs’ Debt Ratios

This paper explores the relationship between the debt ratio of Brazilian football clubs and several potential determinants, both financial and sports-related. Our explanatory variables are Current Ratio, Return on Assets, Score Percentage, Size, 12 Biggest Clubs, Access (to specific championships, e.g. Libertadores da América), Division, Title (won at time t) and Relegated (at time t). Data was collected from several publicly available channels and our sample was mostly decided according to this availability. The time range adopted was 2010-2013. The model employed was Generalized Estimating Equation. Our results suggest that debt ratios are more associated with their popularity or their participation in the highest division of its main championship rather than titles held, access to different competitions or relegation to lower levels. We believe that our findings may be useful for both practitioners, who might know the impact of their sports-related choices in their clubs’ debts, and policymakers, that could prepare differentiated policies for specific groups (e.g divisions).

Strategic Management at Mormaii - the Brazilian Surf Industry Leader

The sport of surfing has been growing rapidly in popularity worldwide and Brazil is among the countries with the largest surfing population, behind the United States and Australia, however, multinational surf companies are rushing in emerging markets like Brazil to find new opportunities for growth. This paper intends to provide insights on how local companies in these markets can overcome and even take advantage of differences with global competitors by re-thinking their core competencies and business models. Therefore, empirical research applying qualitative case study methodology was developed to investigate the role of strategy in the surf industry - a fairly unexplored research topic. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with the founder and CEO and the executive directors at the Brazilian surf industry leader - Mormaii, were conducted to understand how the 4-decade local company found its way to success. Although the theories: RBV, Core Competencies, and Dynamic Capabilities complement each other and help to explain firms’ performance and strategic choices, in empirical studies strategy has been analyzed only by one or another theory. Therefore, the simultaneous use of these three theories intended to fill this gap in the literature and bring more consistency to the discussion of this case study. As a result, this empirical study illustrates the RBV perspective, which stems from the principle that the source of firms’ competitive advantage lies in their internal resources and capabilities, rather than simply evaluating environmental opportunities and threats in conducting business. It also highlights the role that core competence and dynamic capabilities play in the company’s virtuous circle of sustainable growth and provides practitioners clues for re-thinking their strategies.

The goal of the study is to investigate the influence of dynamic capabilities on organizational performance and the role of marketing capabilities as a mediator in this relationship in the context of private HEIs in Brazil. As a research method we carried out a survey with 316 IES and data analysis was operationalized with the technique of structural equation modeling. The results indicate that the dynamic capabilities have influence on organizational performance only when mediated by marketing ability. The marketing capability has an important role in the survival, growth and renewal on educational services offerings for HEIs in private sector, and consequently in organizational performance. It is also demonstrated that mediated relationship is more intense for HEI with up to 3,000 students and other organizational profile variables such as amount of courses, the constitution, the type of institution and type of education do not significantly alter the results.

This article aims to analyze the relationship between the strategic planning process and organizational structure in the reality of a complex organization: the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Catarina (MPSC). The research is set by the single case study research strategy and data were collected through the following instruments: bibliographical research, documentary research, semi-structured interviews and systematic observation. The conclusion indicates that the phases of the strategic planning process influence and are influenced by the elements of the organizational structure and highlights the confluences, the impacts and similarities between the stages of formulation and implementation of the strategic process with the various constituent elements of the organizational structure.

Interaction Between Strategy and Organizational Performance: The Influence of Family Management

This article aims to analyze how occurs the interaction between business strategy and organizational performance in family firms. The research is classified as descriptive, with a qualitative approach, operationalized by the case study procedure. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, documents and notices. Interviews were conducted with key informants and core family run. Evidence collected in the company searched, show that the business strategy with entrepreneurial attitude is characterized by the differentiation strategy (brand management) and product innovation (creation and development of new products) driven by family values disseminated within the organization. The results indicate that entrepreneurial orientation and family influence plays an important role for the realization of structural and strategic fit and, in turn, to the achievement of organizational performance.

The Relationship Between Satisfaction with Complaint Handling and Repurchase Intentions: Detecting Moderating Influences in E-Tail

This paper examines which factors affect the relationship between consumers’ satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intentions. We present a conceptual framework that explains why satisfaction with complaint handling (SATCOM) does not necessary lead to repurchase intention (RI) for online shoppers. The authors test five moderating variables of the relationship between SATCOM and RI: relationship quality (relational factor), economic value, alternative attractiveness (marketplace factor), inferred motives and stability of the failure (failure-related factors). To test our hypotheses, we conducted an online survey with e-shoppers and used moderated regression analysis and a bootstrapping procedure. The findings show that all moderators help to explain the nonlinearity between SATCOM and RI. Hence, this study makes theoretical and managerial contributions related to failures in shopping experiences and repurchase intentions in e-tail.

Supply Strategy: A Quasi-Experiment on the Number And Location of Suppliers

Objective: Evaluate the impact of a second supply source on price, quality and stock levels at the purchasing company. Relevance: The supply strategy defines how many suppliers an item should have and where it should be located. If working with a single supplier may bring relational benefits, working with multiple sources may reduce opportunism risks. If a local supplier reaps benefits on account of its proximity, a global supplier may result in lower costs. Methodology: The quasi-experimental method was used to follow-up a purchasing policy change at an auto parts company, which took on a second supply source for low complexity items. The research collected data on costs, quality and stock coverage for 1,480 items between 2007 and 2012, analysing new supplier’s entrance and location. Results: Introducing a second supplier reduced the price, especially when a new international supplier was introduced. Decreases in quality or increases in stock coverage were not observed.

(Re-)construing Space as Capital: Contributions from a Study with Local Entrepreneurs

Taking as reference the approaches adopted by Bourdieu (2010) and Jacobs (2011), the focus of this article is to present the findings of a research effort designed to investigate the relationships between the constructs Space and Social Dynamics. In this sense, it seeks to investigate in which manner did the relationships among different social agents – emphasizing the roles played by local entrepreneurs – which, upon mobilizing different capitals – economic, social, cultural and symbolic (BOURDIEU, 2010) – shape and are shaped by specific spatial configurations, creators of socio-spatial dynamics that are diversity-enablers to a greater or lesser extent (JACOBS, 2011). For this purpose, an investigation inspired on the Grounded Theory was undertaken, involving documentary analysis, direct observation and 41 semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs, dwellers, passers-by and opinion leaders inserted into the dynamics of an important peripheral street in the city of Sete Lagoas/MG. Notable findings include the relevance of studies that draw more systematic considerations, extrapolating economic, social, cultural and symbolic capitals (BOURDIEU, 2010), allocating a greater importance to “spatial capital”, usually relegated to a secondary plane not only in Bourdieu’s “Theory of Practical Action” as well as in classical studies into Economics and Geography (SANTOS, 2012). Another of this study’s significant findings is that the subjects personified in the different types of entrepreneurs identified – Traditional, Modern and Bricoleurs – do not emerge nor act in a socio-spatial void, nor are independent from each other. Quite the opposite, they are a part of a community social ecology (HANNAN; FREEMAN, 1984), rife with dispute, collaboration and intentional and unconscious synergies, in which space, in addition to technological-economical forces, plays a relevant role.

Remaining Innovative: The Role of Past Performance, Absorptive Capacity, and Internationalization

Emerging markets firms are tardy regarding innovativeness and international orientation. Despite that, some of these firms are becoming increasingly competitive regarding innovation and internationalization. It is still unclear how these firms acquire and maintain an innovative capacity. To address this gap we propose and test a framework that integrates the role of past performance as a proxy to investment capacity, realized and potential absorptive capacity and internationalization and their influences on innovativeness, through a survey of 202 Brazilians firms from the Information Technology industry. The results showed the potential and realized absorptive capacity partially mediates the relationship between past performance and innovativeness, and internationalization moderates the relationship between potential absorptive capacity and innovativeness.

Capital Structure, Internationalization and Countries of Destination of Brazilian Companies: An Analysis of the Upstream-Downstream Hypothesis

This study examines the effect of defining the country of destination of the international debt of Brazilian multinationals, based on the Upstream–Downstream hypothesis. To deepen the discussion of stability suggested by the theory, this paper inserted institutional variables of the target countries of internationalization in econometric models used by previous studies, testing whether the hypothesis Upstream-Downstream remains valid. Starting from a sample involving Brazilian publicly traded multinational and domestic companies between the years 2007 to 2011 and as a statistical method, we performed a regression with panel data. The results show that Brazilian companies when defining the destination countries of internationalization, regardless of these countries presenting higher or lower stability in relation to Brazil, increase their indebtedness. The results showed that among the characteristics present in countries considered as more stable, only the Corruption Perception Index was positively associated with the level of indebtedness of multinationals.

Study on Professors’ Perception With Respect to Higher Education Institutions’ Socially Responsible Initiatives

The organization’s socially responsible actions integration and stakeholders’ demands is an increasingly encouraged practice by the market (Calabrese, Costa & Rosati, 2016). This article looks at the perception that the professor holds on the Higher Education Institution’s (HEI) socially responsible initiatives. Thus, a descriptive quantitative approach with non-probabilistic sample, accessibility and convenience was developed. The literature outlined the corporate social responsibility’s (CSR) main concepts, theories applications and stakeholders. Empirical research collected data from the HEI’s professors, through closed questionnaires. Descriptive analysis and multivariate statistics (cluster and factorial analysis) provided empirical evidence to the research. Results show the high concordance of professors in relation to the analysis categories: Economic, Legal, Ethical and Philanthropic, all of which are considered in this study, according to Carroll (2011). The sharpest legal dimension is given to the professors’ perception. Philanthropic responsibility showed the lowest agreement, coming out to the Carroll (2011) studies, which have supported this work.

Dynamic of Innovation in Services for Consumers at the Bottom of the Pyramid

This paper aims to analyze the dynamic of innovation in services for consumers at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). For this purpose, a framework composed of innovation dimensions, capabilities and infrastructure was developed. To assess the framework behavior in the business practice, a case study was carried out in a retail firm operating in Brazil’s Northeast region whose target consumers are at the BoP. The results showed adherence of the proposed framework to the dynamics of innovation conducted by the studied firm. Considering the theoretical-academic perspective, the framework helps explain the interaction between dimensions, capabilities, and elements of the market infrastructure. As for its practical relevance, it explains how service innovations occur and how to adapt them to the BoP market. In addition, as the structure of the proposed framework includes both external and internal elements, innovation is then considered from different perspectives.

What Drives Long Term Real Interest Rates in Brazil?

This paper investigates the drivers of long term real interest rates in Brazil. It is shown that long term yield on inflation linked bonds are driven by yields on 10 year interest rates of United States (US) government bonds and 10 year risk premium, as measured by the Credit Default Swap (CDS). Long term interest rates in Brazil were on a downward trend, following US real rates and stable risk premium, until the taper tantrum in the first half of 2013. From then onwards, real interest rates rose due to the increase in US real rates in anticipation of the beginning of monetary policy normalization and, more recently, due to a sharp increase in Brazilian risk premium. Policy interest rates do not significantly affect long term real interest rates.

The impact of human resources policies and practices on organizational citizenship behaviors

This study aims to investigate how policies and practices in human resources (PPHR) impact organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). The OCBs represent additional contributions from employees to their organizations and, somehow, individual actions expected in crisis scenario or changing time by managers. The theoretical basis contains Milkovich and Boudreau (1994), Dessler (2002), Demo et al. (2012), among others, to address PPHR and Handy (1978), Organ (1990) and Siqueira (2003) to OCB. We collect data from 156 employees of public, private and mixed companies located in the State of São Paulo. The results revealed significant impact from PPHR over OCB, and we evidence that only professional involvement exhibited significant relation. We also conclude that PPHR influence the dissemination of organizational image and creative suggestions from OCB factors. The results indicate suggestions where managers can act to extract, effectively, organizational citizenship behaviors from their employees.

Green Supply Chain Management: an Analysis of the Supplier-Agro Industry Relationship of a Southern Brazilian Company

This study aimed to analyze the supplier and agro industry relationship regarding the required environmental management practices in the perception of managers. These partners are also called suppliers or subcontractors. This agro industry exports to about a hundred and ten countries. It is one of the largest private employers in the country and has approximately one hundred and fourteen thousand employees. The study was conducted in only one plant. In this unit there are one hundred and fifty registered suppliers. Six suppliers were selected that provided the greatest number of services for the surveyed unit over the last year of work. It is a case study, descriptive and whose approach is qualitative. We found that the main practices carried out in the evaluated companies are in relation to solid waste management. Only two of the companies surveyed have a standardized management and adequate management of the waste generated in their processes. Similarly, only one company has positive practices in relation to water resources. Therefore, this work can be considered a guide for improving the practices adopted by small and medium-sized suppliers of Alpha. The role of alpha is essential for induction of Green Supply Chain Management in the supply chain as a whole.

Competencies and Interactions in Design Management

The inclusion of design in corporate strategies has been a recurring research theme, and organizations are using it as strategic element for gaining competitive advantage in the long term. Thus, it becomes evident the need to manage design activities, making use of concepts related to competencies, learning, dynamic capabilities and other aspects. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating what experts think about design management and competencies, joints and intervenient factors in Brazilian fashion industry. In addition, this article aimed at knowing how design teams are structured and the relationship of these with the organization. The methodology was exploratory, qualitative, through in-depth interviews with ten designers working in Brazilian firms in the fashion industry and four specialists in fashion design. We identify phases and activities of design professional, which are decisive for the design management occurrence in enterprises in apparel industry, identifying the coworkers at each stage of this process.

The Role of Public Institutions for Innovation Support in Brazil

The aim of this study was to present a brief description of the main public instruments for innovation support in Brazil. We also show a preliminary assessment of the use of these instruments in innovative companies. We conducted a two-step analysis. In the first part we conducted a quantitative descriptive analysis of historical series about resources allocation available by FINEP. In the second part we performed a qualitative in-depth analysis of six companies that used the financial benefits offered by FINEP and BNDES to support innovative projects. The responses of the interviews were used to identify the perception of the attractiveness of public instruments for innovation support and possible limitations to their use, while other information was used to present the main public instruments for innovation stimulus in Brazil. The results showed that the investigated companies are interested in using the instruments; however, they face difficulties for their adoption, due to excessive bureaucracy, high costs of innovation, and legal insecurity.

The Influences of Institutional Logics Dynamics on Organizational History: the Case of Veiling Holambra Cooperative

The objective of this paper is to analyze the influences of institutional logics dynamics on the decisions about structural changes adopted by an agricultural cooperative. The literature review was based on the concept of institutional logics and on some peculiarities of the administration of cooperative organizations. We argue that these organizations are hybrids and, as such, report to institutional complexity adopting practices and beliefs consistent with characteristics of more than one institutional logic. In this sense, we draw upon an empirical study, based on a qualitative case study and oral history at Veiling Holambra Cooperative. The field work relied on semi structured interviews, non-participant observations and document analysis. Thus it was possible to identify in the history of the cooperative, from 1948 to 2011, elements that relate to different institutional logics. The paper reinforces logics as non- excludent and contributes for a better understanding of the hybridism phenomenon in organizations. Furthermore, it provides conditions for organizations to revaluate the apparent contradiction between practices with a social purpose and market oriented practices.

Self-Regulated Learning in Accounting: Diagnosis, Dimensions and Explanations

This research analyzes self-regulated learning in Accounting students in two public universities, presenting diagnosis, dimensions and possible explanations, contextualized from the gender, age and stage in the course. The objectives of this paper include to: (a) identify the self-regulated learning strategies used by Accounting students in two public universities, (b) determine the dimensions associated with those strategies, and (c) analyze how these strategies could be explained on the basis of gender, age or stage (semester) of the students in the course. A sample consisting of 249 individuals revealed that gender and age are factors that influence the degree of self-regulation of a student. Women and younger students tend to have higher levels of self-regulated learning, however, in the stage analysis, the results did not show normal distribution, thus demonstrating the impossibility of realizing the increase or decrease of the degree of self-regulated learning among respondents. These results contribute to the practice of teaching accounting, as older students and those with a male gender should receive more special attention in relation to their development of self-regulated, independent and proactive learning.

Brazilian Multinationals´ Competences: Impacts of a “Tug of War” Between Cultural Legacies and Global Mindedness

This study investigates the simultaneous influences of culture and global mindedness on the foreign subsidiaries of Brazilian multinationals (BrMNs). Because the ability to develop competences abroad is critical for emerging multinationals competitiveness, we proposed hypotheses and tested a model for how the competences of subsidiaries may be affected by the dimensions of global mindedness and culture. To do so, we conducted a multilevel survey involving the headquarters and subsidiaries of major BrMNs. The results suggest that global mindedness, which encompasses global orientation, global knowledge, and global skills, is positively related to the development of subsidiaries´ competences. By contrast, cultural factors, including power distance and uncertainty avoidance, are negatively related to competences development. Therefore, these dimensions may exert simultaneous and opposing stimuli and unaligned forces that affect the development of competences abroad, generating a “tug of war” effect.

Jump Diffusion Modelling for the Brazilian Short-Term Interest Rate

In order to capture the informational effect of the Brazilian short-term interest rate (SELIC rate) by Poisson jumps, we build on the tests conducted by Das (2002) and Johannes (2004), which show the significance of such structures for U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcements. As in the above researches, we have found evidence that a relevant amount of the short-term volatility in the fixed income market is captured by introducing jumps on the stochastic process of the short-term rate. This research aims to identify clusters of business segments for the use of cooperative agents for the development of innovations in the manufacturing industry of Brazil. Data from 2008 of Pesquisa de Inovação Tecnológica - PINTEC (Survey of Technological Innovation) were analyzed by cluster analysis technique, in order to facilitate the grouping of industries present in the PINTEC’s data from the patterns of cooperation shown between companies and other agents of innovation. In this sense, there was a larger low valuation of the external cooperation agents, mainly universities and research centers, indicating an innovation model that is still far from the concept of open innovation. On the other hand, the information networks and consumers and suppliers stood out as important innovation agents.

The Structure of Artefacts of Management Control in the Innovation Process: Does Exist Association with the Strategic Profile?

This paper aims to identify what organisations understand and use as management control instruments to provide support to their strategies implemented thru by the innovation process. A survey-based study was developed and the results suggest that innovation is predominantly focused on products and processes, to the detriment of technological and organisational innovation. When addressed individually specific characteristics with regard to the specific strategic types, the instruments presence is more pronounced in the analyser type. The reactor type is associated with absence or non-use of artefacts, specially budgeting and budgeting control. These findings reflect the alignment between strategic types, the availability of instruments and intensity of innovation captured by radical and incremental innovation, which is useful information with which to understand organisations and their market activities and to promote assertive management. The contribution of this paper refers to bring information about specific management control instruments existence and the impact for the intensity of the innovation that is relevant for management.

Market Efficiency and Organizational Corruption: Study on the Impact on Shareholder Value

With this study, we evaluated the influence of disclosure of the involvement of organizations in corruption on creating value for shareholders. We chosen four companies that had their names linked to allegations of corruption in the past 10 years. An event study was used to verify if relevant information tends to be immediately reflected in stock prices. We selected 28 events for analysis and we observed negative and positive variations of the securities in relation to the market, in the days before the disclosure, as in most of the 20 days after publication. However, in cumulative terms, there was a rise in prices over time, returning to levels near those observed before advertising the event. The results indicate that the market did not behave efficiently in this analyzed period.

Dysfunctional Consumer Behavior: Proposition of a Measurement Scale

This study focuses on the development of a scale that can identify customers that are more prone to behave in a dysfunctional manner. Dysfunctional Consumer Behavior can negatively influence the organization profits, since this kind of consumer can generate monetary losses, such as fixing damaged property. Several hypotheses are proposed based on consumer characteristics that could foster dysfunctional behavior. For this, we used an hybrid methodology, combining Churchill’s (1979) with C-OAR-SE (2002). In order to develop the scale, scenarios with dysfunctional behaviors where constructed. Respondents were asked to rate the appropriateness of each behavior and answers a group of questions based on the hypothesis developed. The data was collected over the Internet (Amazon Turk) and the statistical methods used for the scale development were cluster and discriminant analysis. The results showed evidence that it is possible to distinguish consumers through a discriminant function using interpersonal influence, such as aggressiveness, self-exposure, moral flexibility and machiavellianism; and personality aspects, such as dissatisfaction and acceptance.

Social Capital and Selectivity in Academic Co-Authorship Networks: the Case of Accounting Sciences in Brazil

Social capital has been mobilized as an explanatory variable in various empirical studies, but these studies have been unable to overcome the ambiguities inherent in a pre-scientific notion. The present study tests structural autonomy, one of the two established hypotheses on social capital, from the point of view of social network analysis. The test is applied in a case study of the academic co-authorship networks of accounting science programs in Brazil during the period from 2002-2010. The dynamics of selectivity present in this specific network, i.e., criteria of intertemporal choice, institutional endogamy and mutual choice by productivity, were also analyzed. We observed that there were negative correlations between the authors’ constraints and their academic productivity indices, cascading intertemporal choices and endogamous choices according to institutional and productivity criteria.

What Factors Lead Companies to Adopt Social Media in their processes: Proposal and Test of a Measurement Model

The objective of this study was to understand which factors lead companies to use social media to achieve results. For that, a theoretical model was proposed and tested. Data was collected using a survey of 237 companies. In the analysis we analysis used the structural equation modeling technique. The results show that the social media relative advantage and its observability were important factors to social media organizational adoption. We also found that big companies with more formalized organizational structure (OS) tend to adopt social media more than small ones with no formal OS. The companies studied showed strong organizational disposition for innovation adoption.

Conference Calls: an Empirical Analysis of Information Content and the Type of Disclosed News

This article analyzes whether the type of news and the earnings persistence influence the amount of information that is voluntarily disclosed by the companies. As a proxy for voluntary disclosure we use the information content of the conference calls of the companies listed on the BM&F Bovespa from 2008 to 2015. The results indicate that the companies with bad news provide more information during the conference call (presentation section and questions & answers section) than the companies with good news. Moreover, were found evidence that the companies with less persistent positive earnings provide a larger amount of information than the companies with more persistent positive earnings. Regarding companies with negative earnings we did not find any relation between persistence and the informational content.

Interactivity and Explicit Memory Formation of Consumer Undergraduate Male Students on Internet Environment

This research aims to integrate the theories of Explicit Memory and Interactivity, contributing to the theoretical development of both. We investigated whether the interactivity precedes the explicit consumer memory. Data collection was carried on by sending online questionnaire to 876 undergraduate male students, with a return of 453 valid questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling of the constructs Explicit Memory and Interactivity. The analyzes indicate that interactivity increases explicit consumer memory, filling a theoretical gap of this concept about its effects. Moreover, it is a concept related to the future, not only to the past and to present, as shown by the classical definitions. As for explicit memory, its formation results from the individual's interactions with the environment, which was not explained by classical theories. The results indicated that interactivity and explicit memory are almost independent of each other, having low correlation or almost nil.

Impact of Changes in Accounting Standards in Debt Ratios of Firms: Evidence in Brazil

This research investigates the impact of changes in debt ratios of Brazilian firms due to the IFRS adoption. We make a comparison between the forecast of the time-series of debt ratios accounted until 2007 for the span from 2008 to the first quarter of 2015 with those effectively accounted from 2008 to the first quarter of 2015 derived from the new accounting standard. The research utilizes SARIMAX model and Chow’s (1960) structural break forecast test, controlling for changes originating from the macroeconomic environment as well. We find evidence of significant changes in the debt ratio towards both higher and lower debt with predominance of greater ratios. This result is consistent with past literature in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Nevertheless, we do not find evidence of a structural break in the Financial Dependency ratio. Moreover, there is no evidence of any distinct effects across different industries. The research provides new evidence confirming the informational effects of IFRS by utilizing a robust time-series model with macroeconomic controls in an innovative approach towards the accounting environment.

Investing in Private Equity in Brazil

We consider the problem of selecting private equity funds for investment in Brazil. The proposed methodology is based on multi-criteria decision-making. Real data obtained from one of the largest pension funds in Brazil is used to illustrate a practical application of the methodology when selecting investments among eleven private equity funds available in the local financial market. The multi-criteria method TOPSIS is adopted with a total of twenty two criteria to order the investment alternatives. A sensitivity analysis is also presented. The methodology proposed allows a standardized decision-making process, facilitating the process of selecting private equity funds for investment in Brazilian financial markets.

Entrepreneurial alertness: Study of the Influence of Individual Characteristics and Entrepreneurship

This research tried to understand which statistical variables associated to the individual and the company influence the entrepreneurial alertness. The sample was constituted by 180 entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurial alertness was measured in agreement with the model of Tang, Kacmar and Busenitz (2012). Descriptive statistical tests and normality exam were developed; as well as checked the validity and reliability of the scale through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). In order to identify the factors that influenced the alertness we developed multiple linear regression and the ANOVA test to determine possible differences among groups (gender, education). The results showed the negative influence of the educational level and the size of enterprises on alertness level; as well as the negative relationship between age and entrepreneurial experience, furthermore, shows that alert level is not determined by gender difference. One of the main implications of this research is to present factors that can potentiate the effects of the entrepreneurial alertness, enlarging the possibilities of identification of opportunities for individuals.

Eco-Innovation in Global Hotel Chains: Designs, Barriers, Incentives and Motivations

This article aims to verify the reality of eco-innovations developed by global hotel chains, highlighting the innovative designs employed by these organizations, the barriers and incentives faced by these companies and motivations to invest in innovations for this purpose. This multiple case study, of qualitative, descriptive and sectional nature used the thematic content analysis, using the NVivo® software to analyze some of the data obtained and supported on the triangulation of information to increase the reliability of the results. The data sources were empirical research, gathered through interviews and questionnaires, and documentary research. We found that the chains under study develop a large number of eco-innovations in their companies, and most of them are end-of-pipe. In the respondents´ view, there are more barriers than incentives for the development of this type of innovation and the development is driven in large part as a mean to gain competitive advantage.

Price Forecasting Through Multivariate Spectral Analysis: Evidence for Commodities of BM&Fbovespa

This study aimed to forecast the prices of a group of commodities through the multivariate spectral analysis model and compare them with those obtained by classical forecasting and neural network models. The choice of commodities such as ethanol, cattle, corn, coffee and soy was due to the emphasis in the exports in 2013. The multivariate spectral model has proved to be suitable, when compared with others, by enabling a better predictive performance. The results obtained in the out-of-sample period, through the use of measurement error and statistical test, confirm this. This research may help market professionals in formulating and implementing policies targeted to the agricultural sector due to the relevance of price forecast as a planning instrument and analysis of the finance market behavior for those who need protection against price fluctuations.

Psychological Determinants of Academic Achievement in Accounting: Evidence from Brazil

The proposal of this research was to investigate the association between psychological variables and academic performance of 494 students of accounting of a Brazilian public university. We seek, therefore, to highlight some psychological variables to understand the behavior of students of accounting courses. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire based on five psychological constructs: self-efficacy, self-esteem, optimism, locus of control and self-control. Regression analyses were used to identify the influence of the explanatory variables on the academic performance coefficient, with the main results showing that: (i) the variable smoking has a direct impact on the academic achievement of students; (ii) the academic performance of women is higher than that of men; (iii) students within the age range of 20 to 40 years have significantly lower performance than students of other age ranges, and (iv) the variable experience time in accounting is related with the students' performance.

Conditioning Factors of Late Payment of Trade Credit

This article presents new evidence on the practice of financial delinquency of trade credits. The low level of punctuality in payments to suppliers can negatively affect the liquidity of the lender and be transmitted to all companies in the value chain, creating uncertainties in the business environment. The aim is to identify and analyse the factors responsible for delay in payment to suppliers. A survey with 554 brazilian companies located in the provinces of Minas Gerais and São Paulo enable application of the model of ordered logit regression analysis. The dependent variable is the financial delinquency level of companies that do or do not delay the payment of duties, and the independent variables are the demographic, financial, and operational inherent demand for financing and moral hazard. The results show that companies with more short-term debts, beginner on its business activities, and that have a higher proportion of customers who pay their credit purchase on time are more likely to delay their obligations to suppliers.

Delisting Brazilian Public Companies: Empirical Evidence about Corporate Governance Issues

This paper proposes to analyse the relationship between corporate governance and delisting process of public companies listed on the Brazilian Securities, Commodities and Futures Exchange (Bolsa de Valores, Mercadorias e Futuros de São Paulo – BM&FBovespa). The sample comprises 86 voluntary delisting operations in 2008-2012 period and a matching sample with companies that remained public, identified here as “comparable”. A corporate governance index comprising four dimensions (ownership structure, ethics and conflicts of interest, disclosure and board of directors) and a set of 16 questions was used to analyse the two groups. As expected, delisted companies score lower than their comparable ones is the broad index. However, board of directors, disclosure and ethics and conflicts of interest dimensions didn’t show statistical significant differences between the two groups. In the ownership structure dimension the issues related to concentration of control differentiate the groups. Despite the mean differences, corporate governance doesn’t seem to impact significantly the chances to delist in a model with ownership structure and financial variables.

Inquiry into the Conceptual Dimensions of Project Portfolio Management

Although much has been written about how to manage individual projects, there is still little guidance on how to evaluate the “quality” of project portfolio management itself, that is, the degree of “accomplishment” of the process by which the project portfolio is formed and run. This study addresses this gap by employing a qualitative approach to uncover managerial perceptions about what is encompassed by project portfolio management and how the this construct should be evaluated. By building from a review of the scant literature on project portfolio management, conversations with expert scholars on project management, interpretations provided by managers, and theoretical reflection by the authors of this study, it was possible to identify main aspects that seem to tap how the degree of “accomplishment” of project portfolio management can be conceptually defined and operationally measured.

The study has a quantitative approach, based on the model of Barth, Landsman and Lang (2008), was carried out from the financial statements of 133 companies in the period of 2005-2007 (pre-IFRS) totaling 344 observations, as well as 106 companies in the period of 2010-2012 (post-IFRS), totaling 289 observations. The financial statements were extracted from Thomson ONE Banker website. In the data analysis, were applied statistical techniques of multivariate linear regression, F test and Pearson correlation. The results show a rising in income smoothing levels after convergence. It is concluded that the effectiveness of the process of convergence of accounting standards of the country to international standards, in order to get better quality of accounting information, does not depend only on the convergence of accounting standards.

Building a Monthly Chronology of Recessions for the State of Espírito Santo

The state of Espírito Santo has short-term fluctuations in its activity level ("business cycles") that are on average twice more volatile than fluctuations occurring in Brazil. In addition, there are differences in terms of duration between cycles occurring in the state and country. Because of this, the objective of this work is to build a monthly chronology of recessions for the Espírito Santo over the period between January 1991 and March 2012. In terms of means durations it was found that over the period analyzed the Espírito Santo went through a larger number of recessions than Brazil. On the other hand, in terms of median durations, it was noted that recessions tend to last less in the state than in the country, despite its greater relative volatility. Together, these results provide the first empirical characterization of the recessions that occurred in the state in the last 20 years as well as a comparison with the national context.

The Value for the Consumer in Retail

Shopping is not just a rational act, but also emotional, involving desire and pleasure. Therefore, retailers need to invest in actions, which create customer value, making the purchase an engaging time. The article’s objective is to understand what the shoppers, the role played by a person during the shopping process, value during the purchasing experience. The research used the mean-end chains theory and the laddering technique to identify the formative value elements in a toy store. As a result, it contacted that to create value, the store should offer stimuli to assist children education, a magical and playful atmosphere, a variety that can awaken the child's desire, and foster a sense of a good purchase and the maximization of resources such as time and money. This research increases understanding, from the customer's perspective, of what is valued in a holistic shopping experience.

Analysis of Attributes and Dimensions of the Built Environment Quality from the Perspective of Employees from Furniture Companies

The analysis of the attributes and dimensions of the built environment quality (workspace) of companies is relevant, because it is associated to the expectations and perceptions of their employees and related to its satisfaction, productivity and business performance. Thus a survey research was implemented in five furniture companies, located inside the Rio Grande do Sul state, focusing on identifying the dimensions of the quality of the built environments analyzed, and their respective attributes, using as a basis previous studies of the area. Unlike the literature, the study identified seven dimensions of the built environment quality (configuration, appearance, functionality, specific activities, personal relationships, company location and comfort), composed of thirty-one attributes. It was also observed the overall satisfaction of employees of these companies in relation to the work environment, which resulted in a rate of 66.00%.
